How to Brief an AI-Native Production Partner: The Document That Gets You the Series You Want
The production company does not invent the series. It executes the brief. Every creative and technical decision downstream of the commission, the arc map, the character configuration, the paywall position, the visual register, the generation workflow, derives from what the brief specifies. The commercial objective. Paywall conversion rate target, day-7 retention target, or episode completion rate target. The commercial objective is the success metric the series is designed around. The production company that does not know the success metric cannot design the arc map to serve it.
The budget tier. The confirmed production budget range. Not a range wider than 20%. A brief that specifies $60,000 to $150,000 does not communicate the production tier clearly enough for the production company to configure the correct generation tool stack, quality level, and post-production approach.
Section 2: Genre Thesis and Character Configuration
This is the brief's most commercially consequential section and the one most commonly under-specified in first-time commissioner briefs.
The genre thesis. Not the genre label. The specific emotional architecture the series is designed to produce in the viewer at the paywall moment. The brief that says CEO romance is a genre label. The brief that says a CEO romance where the controlled alpha's involuntary vulnerability at episode nine creates the emotional debt that drives paywall conversion is a genre thesis. The arc map built from the first brief produces a generic CEO romance. The arc map built from the second brief produces a series designed around a specific commercial mechanism.
The protagonist configuration. Who the protagonist is, what her starting power position is, what capability she has that the power hierarchy does not yet recognise, and what arc she travels across the 70 episodes. Not her backstory. Her starting position, her arc direction, and her arc destination.
The controlled alpha or antagonist configuration. The power hierarchy's dominant figure and the specific tension axis they represent. The controlled alpha whose exterior conceals involuntary vulnerability is a different production brief from the antagonist whose public power conceals private fragility. Both are valid. The brief specifies which.
The tension axes. The three to four independent sources of unresolved engagement the series maintains simultaneously. The love interest axis, the antagonist axis, and the protagonist capability development axis are the standard three. The brief specifies which axis is primary in which arc block.
Section 3: Arc Map Specifications
The arc map is the production's structural blueprint. It is built in pre-production before any scripts are commissioned. The brief's arc map specifications are the inputs the production company uses to build it.
Episode count and average runtime. 70 episodes at 75 seconds is a different production from 40 episodes at 90 seconds. Both the arc map and the production timeline depend on these two numbers being confirmed before pre-production begins.
Free episode window. How many episodes are free before the paywall. The standard range is five to ten. The specific number determines the arc map's escalation pace in the free window and the emotional debt that must be built before the paywall arrives.
Paywall episode position. The specific episode number where the paywall lands. The arc map is designed so the paywall episode's button cut is at maximum unresolved tension for this specific arc position.
Midpoint reversal position. Approximately episode thirty-five to forty-five for a 70-episode series. The brief confirms where the midpoint reversal occurs and what the reversal changes about the situation's rules.
Resolution sequence start. The episode where the convergence toward resolution begins. Typically episodes sixty to sixty-five for a 70-episode series.
Section 4: Visual Register Specifications
The visual register specification is the brief section that most directly determines what the AI-native generation produces. The generation prompt derives from this section. The character reference pack is built to this specification.
Colour palette. The authority register for the controlled alpha's environment, the aspirational register for the protagonist's arc progression, and the threat register for the antagonist's environment. Not a mood board. Specific colour temperature descriptions that a prompt engineer can translate into generation parameters.
Lighting character. The key light position, colour temperature, and fill ratio for the primary scene types. The authority close-up setup, the intimacy setup, and the confrontation setup. Each specified with enough technical precision that a generation operator can configure the prompt to produce the correct lighting register.
Environment categories. The primary locations the series uses and what is visible in the close-up frame's background depth at 18 to 36 inches behind the character. The CEO office, the corporate common areas, the protagonist's domestic space. Each environment described in terms of the visual elements that must be consistently present across all scenes in that location.
Character visual reference. If the commissioner has visual references for the character types, these are included. Reference images for the controlled alpha's facial structure type, the protagonist's visual register, and the antagonist's visual character. These are inputs to the character reference pack build, not constraints on creative direction.
Section 5: Technical Delivery Specifications
The technical delivery specifications section is the brief's quality assurance document. Every element specified here prevents a delivery revision.
Video codec and container. The platform's required codec and container format for final delivery. MP4 with H.264 is the most common but not universal. Confirm before production begins.
Resolution and aspect ratio. 1080 x 1920 at 9:16 is the standard vertical drama specification. Some platforms require 4K delivery. Confirm before generation begins because the generation tool configuration differs between 1080p and 4K delivery targets.
Frame rate. 24fps or 30fps. Confirm before generation begins.

Section 6: Review Schedule and Approval Points
The review schedule section establishes when the commissioner reviews what and what approval means at each stage.
Arc map approval. The commissioner approves the arc map before scripting begins. Arc map approval confirms that the structural architecture of the series serves the commercial objective. A change to the arc map after scripting is complete requires script revision proportionate to the arc change. Arc map approval before scripting is the cheapest possible quality check.
Script review. The commissioner reviews scripts for episodes one through ten, the paywall episode block, and the midpoint reversal episode. Full script review of all 70 episodes is not necessary and adds timeline overhead without proportionate quality improvement.
Generation sample review. The commissioner reviews a generation sample of three to five episodes from the first batch before approving the remaining batches for generation.
